International Knowledge Network of Women in Politics
The International Knowledge Network of Women in Politics (iKNOW Politics) is an online workspace designed to serve the needs of elected officials, candidates, political party leaders and members, researchers, students and other practitioners interested in advancing women in politics. It is a joint project of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI), the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA).

To avoid a resurgence of violence, it is necessary to develop and support measures for strengthening the governance, security, justice and socio-economic capacities of a state. The local population has the greatest commitment to building sustainable peace. It is therefore essential to draw on the assets, experiences, and dedication at local level and among all sectors of society. One sector often overlooked and underestimated is women.

The Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) started its assembly in the Ethiopian capital on with a debate called by women parliamentarians. "It was a pity that very few men attended the session of women parliamentarians," says Shitaye Minale, deputy speaker of the Ethiopian parliament. "I urge our male colleagues to participate in our future dialogue sessions so that discussions are more interactive and inclusive." For women's rights activists, exposed a conventional mindset, whereby men can be indifferent to discussions on women's issues or with women. "Men are still struggling to think out of the box," observes Nicole Chirac, an activist pushing for equal gender rights.
