Solomon Islands - Strengthening the Capacity of Women and Young Girls in Vura Three Neighbourhood on the Solomon Islands Electoral Process.

Christina’s project seeks to improve local level governance and democracy and the advancement of women leaders in the Solomon Islands. Christina will implement a training program which will strengthen the capacity of Women and Young Girls in Vura Three Neighbourhood Honiara and educate them on the Solomon Island Electoral Process. The objectives of Christina’s project are:

  1. The improvement of local level governance, democracy and the advancement of women leaders in the Solomon Islands
  2. Increasing awareness among women of the National Constitution, Provincial and National Laws that affect them
  3. Local and District Government Structures
  4. Women’s representation in local politics and associated activities, including:
  
  • Election Monitoring
  • Increasing awareness of national and provincial or local electoral laws
  • Increasing awareness of the Solomon Islands political system
  • Increasing women’s knowledge of democratic institutions and tradition at all levels through research

This project is especially pertinent as Solomon Islands will be conducting an election in 2010.


Christina Mitini has completed a baseline survey of women and girls Vura Three Neighbourhood of Honiara. Thirty women and girls will be chosen to participate in a training workshop on governance, elections, and the Solomon Islands governance system.
