More female MPs 'likely' in PNG

The only female MP in Papua New Guinea says she is hopeful that she will see three more women serving in government by the next session of parliament. Dame Carol Kidu has spearheaded efforts to bring more women into PNG's parliament, with strong support from the prime minister and the opposition leader.

Thousands rally: Big crowds are the order of the day during nominations

THOUSANDS of people rallied behind their candidates in traditional dress and in convoys of vehicles as nominations picked up pace around the country. Susan Sam Fima, an accountant based in Mt Hagen, nominating yesterday to contest the Henganofi Open seat currently held by Dr Banahare Bun. She was escorted in a long convoy of vehicles to Henganofi from Goroka, where she filed her nomination papers. Ms Fima is a firm beliver in empowering women to be equal partners with their male counterparts towards nation-building.

Gender - Women's Empowerment

UNDP supports the Government's commitment to the Millennium Development Goal of achieving gender equality, helping it on its efforts to redress these imbalances. The key focus areas for UNDP include reducing gender-based violence, human rights and the promotion of increased participation by women in decision-making positions through leadership training. The Women in Leadership Project in PNG is encouraging women to play an increasing role in politics and increase their participation in mainstream decision making. In 2009, the government officially endorsed allowing three Nominated Seats in the National Parliament for the March seating.

Fostering Democratic Governance

UNDP is helping the PNG government tackle governance issues to fulfill its own aspiration of becoming more efficient, more focused on human rights, more democratic and more accountable, so that it can succeed in overcoming underdevelopment and poverty. PNGs public sector plays a key role in alleviating poverty. UNDP is helping the government improve the provision of services with a particular focus on the poor and supports initiatives aimed at overcoming such things as inefficiency and corruption.

Good Governance in PNG requires Gender Equity

Why is gender equality in governance relevant in our time? In PNG, there is no equal representation as it relates to gender. What political gender legacy are we leaving for future generations? The present generation owes it to the next to set the foundations for the realization of gender equality in the formal arenas of politics. Delaying the facilitation of gender equality in politics will mean delaying any realization of the intentions of s.55 of the Constitution.
