Suva, Fiji - Empowering Rural Women in Good Governance

Implemented by Yvonne Breckterfield

This project aims to provide leadership training for all rural women in Fiji in the areas of good governance, and direct participation of rural women in achieving poverty reduction through the set up of a microfinance group. Training courses for this project will be held for rural based women in the towns of Rabi, Taveuni, Savusavu, and Namosi.

Yvonne’s objectives for this project include:

  1. Enhancing the direct participation of rural women in achieving poverty reduction goals
  2. Training in basic financial literacy
  3. Providing leadership training in promoting good governance for rural women
  4. Promoting rural women`s human rights through CEDAW

Yvonne seeks to see this project provide opportunities to rural women, to improve their quality of life and equip them with knowledge and information so that they can participate effectively in the decision making processes in their communities.

So far, Yvonne has completed two workshops in Rabi to train rural women in governance, leadership and microfinance. Yvonne had an overwhelming response to her training workshops and ended up training fifty people, including ten men.
